Artist Statement:
These words forever inspire me: "Song is
the soul" --Percy MacKaye I came to singing in mid-life, having been one of
those people who didn't think they could sing, and now singing is (almost)
my life, both as a song-leader and performer. I currently facilitate a
weekly song circle called SoulSong in Gloucester, MA and lead Songfire chant
circles and spirit song circles at community gatherings and yoga, spiritual
and healing centers. The other half of my song life is as a singer of
traditional Celtic songs and ballads, which I have performed at festivals
and concert venues in New England. I especially love to sing in the a
cappella sean nos style. But whether it be traditional song or chant, I love
to connect with soul and spirit in song and lead others to do so as well.
For me the whole of one's body/being is an instrument, a vessel to receive
and release song, and I strive to bring others to that experience through
chant, spirit song and sound play. My mentors on this path have been many: I
have practiced spirit singing with Saruah Sarah Benson of the Earth Sound
Light Center and Shawna Carol of the Way of Song Center, have studied
song-leading with Nick Page, and have "workshopped" with, among others, Paul
Winter, David Darling, Jill Purce, Jonathan Goldman and Robert Gass, whose
'On Wings of Song' chant ensemble I recently joined for the recording of
their latest CD of kirtan to be released in 2006.
