Deborah Van Auten
 •  Visual Art: Figurative paintings and giclee prints - Interpretive Realism - Ethereal Quality

 in show appearing: Oct2:2004

Deborah Van Auten attended the University of Iowa during the late '60s, when such artists and writers as Lazansky, Ginsburg and Vonnegut were a source of inspiration, and she flourished in that highly charged creative environment. The Italian Renaissance painters and the works of Balthus left an indelible imprint on her as she explored the personal context of self-expression in her art. Van Auten was drawn to city life and has spent her adult years in San Francisco, London, Boston, and New York where she studied at the Art Students League, School of Visual Arts, and was awarded a scholarship to the Salmagundi Club. The voluptuous figures in Van Auten's work point to the balance between soul and earthly weight, paying homage to the strength of the inner spirit - and are a signature of her style. An adventurous spirit has dominated Van Auten's life, but painting has been the constant. "I am driven by a fascination with psyche, soul, transcendence, individuality, issues of purpose, fear, and love - universal themes common to us all." The award-winning work of Van Auten has been exhibited in New York, Boston, New England and internationally. She has been a guest on BNN-TV, and featured in such publications as The Boston Globe, Boston Sunday Herald, The Inquirer and Mirror of Nantucket, The Improper Bostonian, Art New England, Manhattan Arts, and New Art International, among others. Van Auten is represented by the Arden Gallery in Boston, and the SVG Collection in Nantucket, MA (April - December). She works full time in her studio at Boston Center for the Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. Artist Statement:

"A fascination with psyche, soul and transcendence motivates this artist to create meditative realms of psychological space, which may provide new terrain for reflection and discovery. Lone figures present visions of isolation but reverberate knowledge of divine nature and promised power of transformation."
