"The Conversation" by Carolyn Callahan, Oil Painting

Artist Statement:

Why do I paint? Because this is what is happening in time and space through this object I refer to as "me". It is not personal. It is an impersonal journey of the soul. The visual language is intuitive, not notional. My work expresses a universal feeling that is part of our collective world-dream, our world-concept. It is not intended to reflect the so-called sensorial reality we share, but to intuit our inner unreality.

I am just one of a billion sentient objects through which the universe expresses itself - perhaps for it's own entertainment. I don't create a painting. A painting happens. Sometimes it is judged by myself and others as successful, sometimes not. It doesn't matter. The painting is another concept of inner reality. Just another configuration of feeling which may shift the viewer from the standard notion of existence presented by our senses.

My work is not meant to add to your knowledge of the physical reality - but to subtract from it. To help release the ego from a type of intellectual bondage.

My paintings are just another energy formation which is frozen in time and space. It is just another visual reflection of our collective inner cosmos of emotion and intuition at one particular point.
